Jimmy MacCarthy: The Mad Lady and Me from The Song of the Singing Horseman, 1991. Also recorded by Christy Moore and Sinead O'Connor. This is the original. Among the walls and ruins of the horrid civic stone I walk without a lover for my older bones The sun was strong in going down It was a dreamlike day 'twas there I met the trinity And there I heard them say: Bye bye Mama Bye brother John Fare thee well ye Shandon bells Ring on, ring on She leaned and leaned much closer And she hugged them all goodbye Her mother cried "don't go my love" We all must bye and bye A drunken tongue said "leave her off, she'll drive us all crazy" She turned around and saw my face and both of us was she And we sang bye bye Mama Bye brother John Farethee well ye Shandon bells ring on, ring on Up on to the limestone wall And down the ladderl steps She threw herself into the stream with a splash of no regrets Sidestroke swimming midstream Throwing kisses to the crowd And everything was silent And the sky had not one cloud But for bye bye Mama Bye brother John Fare thee well ye Shandon bells ring on, ring on We were swimming out on the sunset, we were swimming out to sea, Swimming down past the Opera House The Mad Lady and me And we sang bye bye Mama Bye brother John Fare thee well ye Shandon bells ring on, ring on

Description :
For our inaugural "solo" YouTube contribution we have covered a Christy Moore staple that has been a favourite of ours for a long time but what is it all about? There is little information or commentary available for such a popular song and the writer, the gifted Jimmy McCarthy has, so far as we know and entirely appropriately, been very quiet in offering any kind of clue or explanation. We like to think that, like many great songs, it is capable of working on several different levels. It could be about the loss of a lover, a sad acknowledgement that the ends cannot always justify the means or it could simply be a song about a horse and rider! Whatever the meaning to you, we hope you enjoy our interpretation.

the collection live 1992 No Frontiers (Jimmy McCarthy) If life is a river and your heart is a boat And just like a water baby, baby born to float And if life is a wild wind that blows way on high Then your heart is Amelia dying to fly Heaven knows no frontiers And I've seen heaven in your eyes And if life is a bar room in which we must wait 'Round the man with his fingers on the ivory gates Where we sing until dawn of our fears and our fates And we stack all the deadmen in self addressed crates In your eyes faint as the singing of a lark That somehow this black night Feels warmer for the spark Warmer for the spark To hold us 'til the day When fear will lose its grip And heaven has its way Heaven knows no frontiers And I've seen heaven in your eyes If your life is a rough bed of brambles and nails And your spirit's a slave to man's whips and man's jails Where you thirst and you hunger for justice and right Then your heart is a pure flame of man's constant night In your eyes faint as the singing of a lark That somehow this black night Feels warmer for the spark Warmer for the spark To hold us 'til the day when fear will lose its grip And heaven has its way And heaven has its way When all will harmonise And know what's in our hearts The dream will realise Heaven knows no frontiers And I've seen heaven in your eyes Heaven knows no frontiers And I've seen heaven in your eyes

No, he didn't appreciate me at all - the story: I ordered the guitar in the video (a Yamaha APX10NA), back in 1999, from a Yamaha distributor in Dublin. It took a few months to arrive and when I went to pick it up I decided to give it a good work out before parting with my money because it wasn't cheap. There was only one other customer in the shop at the time and wasn't it the bould Jimmy Mccarthy a singer-songerwriter that I greatly admire. He was trying out an electric piano. The Yamaha people had plugged my guitar into an amp and I was able to make a bit of noise. I'm sure Jimmy was thinking "I wish that eejit in the corner would shut-up, I'm trying to check out this here piano". Well Jimmy if you read this I offer sincere, if belated, apologies and I hope you got a better bargain than I did. And the video here? It's a mangled instrumental version of Jimmy's simple but beautiful song "Ride On".
